Choosing the right Aged Care home for your loved one

Aged Care Homes provide a wide range of health, personal care services and lifestyle activities.

Services typically include nursing care, 24-hour supervision, three meals a day and assistance with everyday activities. Rehabilitation services and dementia care are also often available (these vary from home to home).

In some instances, people may stay at an aged care/ nursing home for a short time after being in the hospital. After they recover, they go home. However, many aged care residents live there permanently because they have ongoing physical or cognitive conditions that require constant care, support and supervision.

If you or your loved one that may require transition into aged care living after a hospital stay, we can advise on the home that is best for you based on your loved one’s individual lifestyle interests and personal needs.

Things to Consider. What is important to you? Whether it be nursing care, meals, physical therapy, religion, physical care or specialty units for dementia support? Location is also important, a place close to family and friends so they can easily visit.

Ask Questions. Your friends, relatives and care workers may be able to offer advice. If you are feeling overwhelmed though, aged care consultants such as A Home can help with a no obligation chat.              Our Aged Care professionals can assist with your questions and if we do not have the answers, we source them from our aged care community network. We can shortlist homes to suit your requirements and locale as well as offer financial advice.

Visit. We can book tours with homes that are shortlisted, and we are happy to provide a consultant to visit with you for peace of mind. We encourage our clients to ask any questions during these visits. Nothing is off limits. It’s important to see how staff interact with the residents.

Visit again. If you are still unsure, a second visit is always a good decision. Try another day of the week or time of day so you will meet other staff members and see different activities. Stop by at mealtime. Is the dining room attractive and clean? Does the food look tempting and nutritious?

Understand. Once you select a nursing home, carefully read the contract. Question the director or assistant director about anything you don’t understand or ask us if you are unsure. Ask a good friend or family member to read over the contract before you sign it. Also, when you have made a choice on a home you like, check the homes accreditation history. All this information is available online for the public.
